Cinequest 18

This year, the 18th iteration of the festival opened on February 27th with Eden Court, and then continued through March 9th.

I posted my planned schedule as I worked it out. As one step in preparing to do that, I went through all of the feature length films playing and attempted to find them on the Internet Movie Database, so that I could get some data on the films that is less biased than the Cinequest program. This is not a criticism of Cinequest—if they didn’t like a film, they wouldn’t have included it. The resulting IMDb list can be found here. Note that IMDb generally lists films with the title in the original language, whereas the Cinequest program is alphabetized by the English titles.

This year I also used a web site called Festival Fanatic, which has the Cinequest 18 schedule available. Their automatic scheduling wasn’t useful for my case, but if you go through and rate the films you want to try to see, you can then use manual mode pretty effectively.

Here’s the schedule for what I ended up seeing:

  • 2/27/2008 7:00pm: Eden Court—opening night film
  • 2/28/2008 7:00pm: Bitter Sweetheart—Swedish comedy
  • 2/28/2008 9:30pm: Commit.—comedy/drama filmed in three long takes, one per act
  • 2/29/2008 7:00pm: The Substitute—Danish science fiction comedy
  • 3/1/2008 11:30am: The Trap—Serbian drama recommended by multiple people
  • 3/1/2008 7:00pm: The Reject—Another Serbian drama
  • 3/1/2008 9:30pm: Gone with the Woman—Norwegian film by the director of Elling
  • 3/2/2008 11:00am: The Village Barbershop—gender conflict drama
  • 3/2/2008 1:30pm: Autism: The Musical—documentary whose title seems to say it all
  • 3/2/2008 4:30pm: Mardik: From Baghdad to Hollywood—documentary about the writer of Raging Bull and other films
  • 3/2/2008 6:45pm: Mars & Venus—Norwegian comedy
  • 3/3/2008 5:00pm: The Aerial—Argentinian black and white, mostly silent film that was recommended
  • 3/4/2008: [other commitments]
  • 3/5/2008 6:45pm: Butterflies—Swedish drama
  • 3/6/2008 6:30pm: Shelter Me—Italian drama
  • 3/7/2008: [other commitments]
  • 3/8/2008: [other commitments]
