Up in the Air

Up in the Air revolves around Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), whose job is to fly around the country and lay people off for other people who don’t want to do it themselves. He’s on the road far more than he’s home, and he has the routine down so well that it actually prefers it that way. His hobby is to collect frequent flyer miles, and lots of them. The other two significant characters are Alex (Vera Farmiga), who Ryan meets in a hotel bar, and Natalie (Anna Kendrick), a young employee of the same company as Ryan’s who has devised a way for Ryan’s job to be done by video conference, without flying around the country.

All three of these actors got Oscar nominations, the director (Jason Reitman, who can seemingly do nothing wrong) got a best director nomination, the film got a best picture nomination (Reitman again, as one of the producers), and finally, the film got a nomination for best adapted screenplay (Reitman one more time, as co-writer). It really does deserve all of this acclaim. It is wonderfully constructed. The performances manage to touch you even though the characters really shouldn’t be all that likeable. It just works.

I’ll give it a lower out of .

[Reminder: I’m still catching up on movie reviews. I’m currently seeing films at Cinequest, and to avoid scrambling the order of my reviews I’m not posting Cinequest reviews here until after I catch up, which will be after Cinequest. In the meantime I am posting my Cinequest reviews over on the Cinequesting blog.]
