Slumdog Millionaire

Unless you have been living in a cave, you know the basic premise of Slumdog Millionaire: a poor young man from the slums of Mumbai gets onto the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” and he surprisingly knows the answers due to his particular life history.

Much has been written about this film, and most of it is positive. It is a good film, with often spectacular visuals, but I have to say that it seems at least a little overrated (currently #34 on IMDb’s top 250 list). The acting is average, and while the story has good moments, it also has thoroughly mediocre ones. Its reputation as a “feel good” movie is also questionable to my mind.

This film is expected to win the Best Picture Oscar®, and if it does it certainly won’t be the worst film so honored, but it won’t be the best either. I’ll give it a strong 3 stars out of 4 stars.
