Starting Out in the Evening

Starting Out in the Evening is a great little film with an Oscar®-worthy performance by Frank Langella, which sadly was not nominated. Lauren Ambrose and Lili Taylor, both of whom were on Six Feet Under, are also very good. Langella plays a novelist who hasn’t finished a book in a decade, Taylor his daughter, and Ambrose a graduate student who wants to bring him back into the spotlight.

The director is Andrew Wagner, whose only prior film was The Talent Given Us. That film had its charms, but I never would have guessed that the same director could direct something this good.

Like I said, this is a very good small film. If you like those kinds of movies, you should look for this one.

I’ll give it a full 4 stars out of 4 stars.

Seen 12/23/2007.
